Projects

Since the inception of the company, Artistic Director & Choreographer Gavin Rees, has created a strong portfolio of work. Keen to push the boundaries of dance performance, the company has developed work across different performance mediums, demonstrating Gavin Rees’s experience from a rich and diverse performance career.

Nobody

Nobody examines the interplay of language and culture, drawing from choreograph Gavin Rees’s Welsh heritage. As a first-language Welsh speaker, Gavin was inspired by his experience of moving to England at age 19. The piece captures his journey of adjusting to a new linguistic and cultural environment while reflecting his growing connections with nonnative British peers and friends. This narrative is both deeply personal and widely relatable.

Helium

This compelling dance-theatre performance delves into the emotional and psychological landscape of isolation and mental health. Through a fusion of contemporary movement and deeply personal storytelling, it explores themes of identity, gender, medication, and the societal connotations of mental well-being. With a haunting score and raw, autobiographical performances, the show invites audiences to witness these struggles through a voyeuristic lens, provoking thought and conversation. A visceral and immersive experience, it challenges perceptions and offers a deeply human perspective on mental health.

Living Shadows

Initially choreographed and performed in an alternative, outdoor setting, Living Shadows has been adapted for indoor performance spaces.  Living Shadows delves into the realities of homelessness, addressing the universally relatable themes of displacement, disenfranchisement and communion.

Thy Myth

Skipton Camerata launches its 2026 season with an ambitious cross-genre collaboration, joining forces with Rees Dance Company to present a newly choreographed performance of Arnold Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht. Translated as Transfigured Night, the work by Arnold Schoenberg is a richly expressive musical response to a poem by Richard Dehmel. The story follows two people walking through a dark forest as they confront a life-altering confession. What begins in shadow unfolds into forgiveness, generosity and radiant transformation.

Living Shadows – Outdoor Arts

A collaborative project with charity, Focus4Hope. Living Shadows is an exploration of homelessness, specifically displacement and disenfranchisement; informed by discussions and resources provided by the homeless charities and organisation in West Yorkshire. Performed in an alternative, outdoor setting.

Unspoken – Bright Nights

Rees Dance Company in collaboration with Wayne Sables Project, showcased a light installation with live dance performance at Barnsley Bright Nights 2019.
